The budget bill 2025: Focus on energy, innovation and sustainability

The government has presented a powerful budget for 2025, with a clear focus on research, energy transition and sustainability. Some of the key ventures include:

  • Energy research and innovation: SEK 1.65 billion for research in fossil-free energy, with particular emphasis on the development of hydrogen technology.
  • Energy research and innovation: SEK 1.65 billion for research in fossil-free energy, with particular emphasis on the development of hydrogen technology.
  • Nuclear power and electricity preparedness: SEK 400 billion in credit guarantees for nuclear power and SEK 733 million to strengthen electricity preparedness.
  • Electricity grid investments: SEK 100 million in 2025, with a planned increase to SEK 400 million in 2027.
  • Charging and refueling infrastructure: SEK 930 million for expansion of charging and refueling infrastructure for electric and hydrogen vehicles.
  • Industriklivet: SEK 100 million to support heavy industry in reducing emissions through electrification and hydrogen use.

Despite these investments, there is a lack of clear long-term strategies for hydrogen production and infrastructure, something that is needed for Sweden to be able to compete on the European market and achieve EU climate targets.

Strenghts:

  • Strong investment in energy research that can promote green hydrogen and innovation.
  • Investments in hydrogen tank infrastructure, especially for heavy vehicles.Investeringar i vätgastankinfrastruktur, särskilt för tunga fordon.

Challenges:

  • Lack of specific support and strategies to accelerate hydrogen production and infrastructure.
  • A long-term strategy for hydrogen is missing, which could delay the green transition.

In order to strengthen Sweden’s position in green hydrogen, additional investments and a clearer national strategy for the production and distribution of hydrogen are required.
