First shipment of fossil-free iron pellets to be shipped in the first half of 2025
Greeniron in Sandviken is preparing to ship its first shipment of fossil-free iron pellets. In just nine months, the company has built the world’s first full-scale factory for fossil-free metals. The technology, developed 50 years ago by CEO Edward Murray’s father, reduces metal oxides without fossil fuels and recovers metals from complex waste materials.
Scalable technology and strong investor interest
GreenIron complements projects such as SSAB’s Hybrit and is working with Arcelor Mittal and has letters of intent with Stegra (formerly H2 Green Steel), Vale and Rio Tinto. The company has developed a modular and scalable process that requires less capital than traditional steel mills. With its cycle-based technology, GreenIron can adapt production to electricity prices and availability.
The company aims to build 164 furnaces by 2030 and is now conducting an investment round. Investors are showing great interest, especially as GreenIron does not rely on green premiums or optimistic hydrogen price forecasts. Owners include the Wallenberg sphere’s investment company FAM, Almi Invest, Longrun Capital, as well as business profiles such as Carl-Henric Svanberg and Hans Stråberg.
