Pressrelease: Experience the future of public transport – a hydrogen bus comes to Sweden

Sweden will host the Nordic leg of the Hydrogen Bus Road Tour this spring. Sweden hosts the Nordic hydrogen bus roadshow this spring as part of the JIVE (Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe) projects supported and funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. A zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell bus will visit four Swedish cities – Stockholm, Gothenburg, Ljungby, and Växjö – to demonstrate how climate-smart public transport can already become a reality today.

Strong collaboration behind the roadshow

Hydrogen Sweden is organizing the roadshow together with partners including Toyota, Strandmöllen, Hydri, PS Energi, and Växjö Airport. The event is part of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership funded JIVE projects, which has deployed 300 hydrogen buses on European roads. The JIVE projects has already organised three roadshows in several Eastern European countries between 2022 and 2024, with Sweden and Finland hosting the fourth and last roadshow from the projects this year. The previous initiatives had an important impact on local demand, with all participating cities announcing a formal interest in deploying hydrogen fuel cell buses after the roadshow. It also contributed to a higher understanding of technology and its benefits to a large audience.

The tour kicks off in Solna on April 23 and concludes at Växjö Småland Airport on May 7. The hydrogen bus will then head to Finland for its final stops.

Why hydrogen vehicles?

“The development of zero-emission vehicles is progressing rapidly, but we need multiple technical solutions to meet different needs. Batteries work well in many cases, but not always when driving long distances or when there’s no time for frequent charging. That’s where hydrogen vehicles have an advantage – they offer longer range and fast refueling. In regions where hydrogen refueling stations already exist, or will soon be available, the rollout of hydrogen buses can start immediately,” says Björn Aronsson, Managing Director of Hydrogen Sweden.

“The Nordic Hydrogen Bus Roadshow in Sweden represents another key step forward in Europe’s transition to climate-neutral transport. We are proud to say that through the JIVE project we are not only demonstrating the technological maturity of hydrogen fuel cell buses but also speeding up their commercial use.

In fact, the deployment of over three hundred fuel cell buses in sixteen European cities, together with a significant reduction in costs – from €1.5 million to less than €625,000 per bus – shows how JIVE and JIVE 2 are contributing to European industrial leadership and strengthening the EU’s competitiveness in the international clean mobility market. By leveraging support from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, regional actors, industry leaders and other European funding, JIVE is a clear example of how the EU can lead the transition towards a carbon neutral future by 2050″

Sweden stop:

– April 23 – Solna, Stockholm

– April 29-30 – Gothenburg

– May 5-6 – Ljungby

– May 7 – Växjö Småland Airport

Official workshop: Tackling barriers together

An official workshop will take place in Stockholm on 23rd April, aiming to address the different barriers to hydrogen powered buses in the country and attempt to find solutions. It will host representatives from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, Hydrogen Europe and ERM together with Sweden central and local authorities’ representatives, experts, and energy associations.

Experience the technology firsthand

Visitors will have the opportunity to:

  • Test drive the Caetano H2 City Gold hydrogen bus
  • Test the hydrogen bus from Toyota and BMW
  • Meet technical experts
  • Discuss the future of sustainable mobility with decision-makers and industry representatives

“The Nordic Hydrogen Bus Tour is an opportunity to show that hydrogen-powered vehicles are not only safe and environmentally friendly, but also a smart solution for the future of public transport. We want to create understanding, but also inspire action”, says Björn Aronsson.

Background

The JIVE and JIVE2 projects are financed by the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking under grant agreements no. 735582 and 779563. The Clean Hydrogen Undertaking receives support from the European Union’s research and innovation programs Horizon 2020, Hydrogen Europe, and Hydrogen Europe Research.

The JIVE and JIVE2 projects, which started in January 2017 and January 2018, respectively, have deployed approx. 300 zero-emission fuel cell buses and associated infrastructure (under the MEHRLIN project) in 16 European cities and regions, which represents the largest implementation in Europe so far. The buses have been deployed in cities and regions in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

About the Clean Hydrogen Partnership

The Clean Hydrogen Partnership is supporting research and innovation (R&I) activities in hydrogen technologies in Europe. It aims to accelerate the development of advanced clean hydrogen applications ready for market, across end-use sectors such as energy, transport, building and industry, while strengthening the competitiveness of the clean hydrogen value chain. The members of the partnership are the European Commission, fuel cell and hydrogen industries represented by Hydrogen Europe and the research community represented by Hydrogen Europe Research.

About Hydrogen Sweden

Hydrogen Sweden is an industry association driving the development of a sustainable society through hydrogen technology. The organization brings together actors from business, the public sector, and academia to accelerate the transition to a fossil-free future.
